App revenue calculator
Estimate an app's monthly revenue from what its store page shows: ratings or installs, age and price. A range with every assumption shown, not a made-up single number.
Estimated monthly revenue
$560 – $12k
Middle of the range about $2.7k a month, from 10,417–20,833 downloads a month at a $29.99 top price.
Assumptions: 50–100 downloads per App Store rating; 1.5–4% of downloads pay; a paying user is worth a tenth to a quarter of the top price each month; renewals add 20–100% on top of new payers.
How it works
- Downloads a month: App Store ratings a month × 50–100 downloads per rating, or Google Play's install floor spread over the app's age × 1–2.5.
- Paying users: 1.5–4% of downloads, for apps that sell something.
- Revenue: a paying user is worth a tenth to a quarter of the top price each month, and renewals add 20–100% on top.
- The low ends multiply together and the high ends multiply together, which makes the range wide on purpose. A narrow band would be false precision.
Questions
- How accurate is it?
- It is an order-of-magnitude estimate. Neither store publishes revenue; the range tells you whether an app earns hundreds, thousands or hundreds of thousands a month, not the exact figure.
- Where do I find the numbers?
- The rating count and the in-app purchase prices are on the app's store page; the release date is under version history. On Google Play the install band is shown under the app name.
- Why does recent pace matter?
- An app that peaked years ago earns like it does today. If you know how many ratings it gained last month, use that instead of the lifetime average.
