What is CPI (cost per install)?

CPI is what an advertiser pays, on average, for one install from a paid campaign.

CPI depends on the country, the platform, the category and how well the ad and store page convert. It means little on its own: an install is only worth buying if the user is worth more than the CPI, which is where lifetime value comes in.
